Free verbal reasoning questions with answers
Eight worked practice questions: four true / false / cannot say statements on one passage, then assumption, inference, weakening and summary questions. These are not part of the paid test. For more of the classic format, see our true / false / cannot say practice questions; for a real countdown, take the full 20-question timed test.
Passage 1 (fictional, for practice). Answer True if the statement follows from the passage, False if the passage contradicts it, and Cannot say if the passage does not give enough information.
Harbourline, a logistics firm, introduced core hours for its remote staff in January. Everyone must be available between 11:00 and 15:00 London time; outside those hours, staff choose when to work. Meetings may only be scheduled during core hours, except calls with customers. Staff based more than five hours from London time are exempt from core hours. In a June survey, 72% of the staff who answered said they preferred the new system.
Question 1
Statement: A Harbourline employee may schedule an internal team meeting at 16:00 London time.
- True
- False
- Cannot say
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, False. False. Meetings may only be scheduled during core hours (11:00 to 15:00), and the only exception is calls with customers. An internal meeting at 16:00 breaks the rule.
Question 2
Statement: Most Harbourline staff prefer core hours to the previous arrangement.
- True
- False
- Cannot say
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C, Cannot say. Cannot say. 72% of the staff who answered the survey preferred the new system, but we are not told how many staff answered. A majority of respondents is not necessarily a majority of all staff.
Question 3
Statement: Every Harbourline employee must be available between 11:00 and 15:00 London time.
- True
- False
- Cannot say
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, False. False. Staff based more than five hours from London time are exempt. Watch for absolute words such as every, all, never and only.
Question 4
Statement: Harbourline introduced core hours to reduce the number of meetings.
- True
- False
- Cannot say
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C, Cannot say. Cannot say. The passage describes the rules but gives no reason for them. Do not fill gaps with what sounds likely.
Question 5
Argument: "Our support agents who use a second monitor close more tickets per day than agents who do not. So if we buy second monitors for everyone, the team will close more tickets." Which assumption does the argument depend on?
- Second monitors are cheap to buy.
- The agents who already have a second monitor do not close more tickets for some other reason, such as more experience.
- Customers prefer fast answers to detailed ones.
- All agents work the same number of hours.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, The agents who already have a second monitor do not close more tickets for some other reason, such as more experience.. The argument moves from "agents with monitors close more tickets" to "monitors cause more closed tickets". That only works if something else (experience, easier tickets) does not explain the gap. Cost and customer preferences are beside the point.
Question 6
Passage: "Applications for the analyst role opened on 1 March and closed on 31 March. The company only interviews candidates who pass an online numerical test. Of the 240 applicants, 90 passed the test. Interviews were held in April." Which statement is best supported by the passage?
- 90 candidates were interviewed.
- No candidate who failed the numerical test was interviewed.
- Most applicants passed the numerical test.
- The role was filled in April.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, No candidate who failed the numerical test was interviewed.. Only candidates who pass are interviewed, so nobody who failed was interviewed. We do not know that all 90 who passed were interviewed, 90 of 240 is not most, and nothing says when the role was filled.
Question 7
Argument: "Since we moved the weekly team meeting from Monday to Wednesday, fewer people have missed it. So Wednesday is a better day for the meeting." Which statement, if true, most weakens the argument?
- Some team members preferred Mondays.
- At the same time, the meeting was cut from 60 to 30 minutes.
- The team is the same size as before.
- Wednesday is in the middle of the week.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, At the same time, the meeting was cut from 60 to 30 minutes.. If the meeting also got shorter at the same time, the shorter meeting could explain the better attendance, not the day. An alternative cause is the classic way to weaken a cause-and-effect argument. The same team size slightly supports the argument.
Question 8
Passage: "Written updates let a distributed team share progress without waiting for everyone to be online. They also leave a record that new joiners can read. But they can feel slow for urgent problems, which most teams still handle on a quick call." Which statement best summarizes the passage?
- Written updates should replace all calls.
- Written updates suit routine progress sharing, while urgent problems are usually handled on a call.
- New joiners prefer calls to written updates.
- Distributed teams should avoid written updates.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B, Written updates suit routine progress sharing, while urgent problems are usually handled on a call.. The passage gives two benefits of written updates and one limit (urgent problems). Only B keeps both sides. A and D go further than the text, and C is not mentioned.
Questions
How long is the verbal reasoning test?
20 questions in 10 minutes, so about 30 seconds per question. The clock starts when you press Start and keeps running if you reload or close the page. At 0:00 your answers are submitted automatically.
Can I go back and change answers?
Yes. Use the question navigator to jump to any question and change your answer until you submit or the time runs out. Unanswered questions count as wrong; there is no penalty for guessing.
Do I get the same questions each attempt?
Yes. Each test has a fixed set of 20 questions, so a second or third attempt partly measures memory. Use the explanations to learn the methods, then retake it to practice your pace.
Do I need any special knowledge?
No. Every question can be answered from the information given. You do not need business, math or design knowledge.
Is this a real employer test?
No. The question formats are similar to those used in common employer aptitude tests. This is an independent practice test written by us, not an official test of any employer or test publisher and not affiliated with one. It has not been validated or normed, so treat your score as practice feedback only.
Do you show an IQ score or a percentile?
No. The cognitive, numerical and verbal tests show how many questions you answered correctly, a breakdown by question type and the time you used. The psychometric test shows a work-style profile instead of a score. There is no external norm group behind these tests, so we do not compare you with the general population. A comparison with other Remotely Scaled test-takers will be added once enough people have taken a test, and only then.
Are the questions copied from real tests?
No. Every question was written by us for these tests. We based them on the publicly described formats of common aptitude tests (question types and timing), not on any real test's questions.
What do I get when I buy?
Each test is 20 questions with a countdown timer (cognitive ability test 10 minutes, numerical reasoning test 15 minutes, verbal reasoning test 10 minutes, the psychometric test 10 minutes). You can take each test up to 3 times. After each attempt of the cognitive, numerical or verbal test you see your score, a breakdown by question type, and every question with the correct answer and a short explanation; the psychometric test gives you a work-style profile. Prices: $21 each for the cognitive, numerical and verbal tests, $29 for the psychometric test. All four together are $59 instead of $92 (you save $33).
How do I pay, and is it a subscription?
It is a one-time payment through a secure Stripe checkout, not a subscription. Prices show in euros if you are in the EU and in US dollars everywhere else. Stripe picks the checkout currency from your location, so it can differ from the one shown here. After paying you return to this site and can start right away.
Can I use my tests on another device?
Yes. After checkout we email a personal access link to the address you used. Open it on any device. If you lose it, enter your checkout email on the test page and we will send it again.
Is my data stored?
We store your purchase reference, the time you started your access, how many attempts you used and your answers for scoring. We do not store your name. Your checkout email is used by Stripe and to send your access link. See the privacy policy.
What does cannot say mean in a verbal reasoning test?
Cannot say means the passage does not give enough information to decide whether the statement is true or false. Use only the passage, not your own knowledge or what sounds likely.
What is the difference between false and cannot say?
False means the passage says the opposite of the statement. Cannot say means the passage is silent or only partly covers it. If you have to add information to decide, the answer is usually cannot say.
