About the role
Location: Remote, US
Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy.
Business Map is a new team in Toast's growing Enterprise engineering org. We own how Toast models a business: its locations, the organization that owns them, and how they're grouped. More of our customers run many locations, operate as franchises, or have locations that aren't restaurants, and the platform needs to grow with them. We build the foundation other teams use to serve those customers, and we own the core services it runs on.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build that foundation. You'll own features end to end on a small team, from location creation and copy to the new Organization APIs and the internal tools that manage them, working day to day with the team's Staff and Principal engineers. The work ships into services much of Toast depends on, so you'll learn the core of the platform quickly and see your changes used across the company.
A day in the life (Responsibilities)
Design, build, and ship features in Business Map's backend services, from a written design through production rollout
Own a feature area end to end, including its tests, monitoring, and staged rollout behind feature flags
Work with engineers on partner teams as they adopt new location and organization data
Join the team's on-call rotation, and fix the root causes of what you find there
Write designs for your features and give thoughtful code reviews
Help newer engineers on the team through pairing and code review
What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)
5+ years building backend services in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language
Proficient with relational databases and SQL (we use Postgres)
Experience owning and operating production systems, including on-call and debugging live issues
Experience with distributed systems, event-driven messaging, or microservices
A track record of taking ambiguous projects from design to production
Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and product partners
Experience or strong interest in using coding agents and AI-assisted development day to day
What will help you stand out
Experience making changes in a large, long-lived codebase while it serves production traffic
Experience with multi-tenant data models, account hierarchies, or multi-location systems
Familiarity with gRPC, GraphQL, or event streaming platforms
